Are your home wiring and switchboards safe?

We have all heard the stories about old homes and dodgy wiring. Many older homes (or office buildings) are not adequately wired to deal with modern high-demand electrical loads. If demand from electrical devices is greater than the main switchboard’s ability to supply, then it’s time to install a new switchboard. Unfortunately even newer homes can have issues where less reputable electricians or do-it-yourselfers taking shortcuts. In fact faulty and improperly installed wiring is the leading cause of fires in homes and commercial buildings. Signs of faulty wiring include: Lighting fixtures dimming when appliances or motors are turned on Overheating or shortened lifespan in appliances and motors (including TV’s and computers) A visible sparking when switches are turned on Fuses blowing or circuits frequently tripping The wiring insulation appears discoloured or brittle It’s not worth risking your home or your family’s safety. If you have any of these signs occurring in your home or office, please book a safety inspection immediately. LED lighting is a safer and thriftier lighting choice

LED lighting is perfect for where directional lighting is required, as in desk lamps, overhead cooking, along pathways and stairs. LED’s save up to 90% on lighting energy bills and replacement costs. LED vs Fluorescent LED lighting can last upward of 60,000 hours before needing to be replaced. (You would need to replace the average compact fluorescent bulb 6 times for every LED bulb.) LED stands for light emitting diode. LED light bulbs use about 6 watts of power, almost half the wattage of fluorescent lighting, making them 5 times more efficient. LED downlights use up to 85% less electricity than regular lamps. They are ideal for illuminating offices, supermarkets, task lighting, store displays and under cabinets. LED vs Halogen The heat emitted from LED lighting is minimal compared to standard halogen bulbs, which serves to significantly reduce fire risk. Halogen bulbs reach temperatures up to 350 degrees Celsius. Incorrectly installed halogen downlights can start ceiling fires that go undetected by smoke alarms until it’s too late. Recent statistics show that one in five Victorian house fires is caused by halogen downlights. Since 1992 USA studies reveal that overheating halogen floor lamps are responsible for 11 deaths and 189 fires.  When dust, insects and rubbish accumulate in the bowl design of halogen floor lamps this creates a fire hazard. If you have any doubts about the installation of your lighting, especially downlights, then have qualified electrician perform a safety inspection and provide a quote for replacement with LED. Safety cautions with CFL Lighting

While the spiral shaped CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light) bulbs are definitely energy saving, they do not compare to the efficiency of LED lighting. In addition each CFL bulb contains 5mg of elemental mercury. Mercury exposure has many serious health consequences. Extreme care is needed when bulbs break to reduce the risk of mercury exposure. They must never be handled with bare skin. Windows should be opened for ventilation and any heating/cooling turned off. In addition the bulbs must be disposed of thoughtfully, if possible taken to a CFL recycling location. Any broken pieces need to be carefully collected and wrapped in plastic or newspaper so that the mercury does not vaporise into the air or leach into water supplies. They are not suggested for use in desk, bed or other close lamps where in constant close proximity to a person.
